Jane Austen’s beloved novel, Emma, is a highly recommended book on the local schools’ reading list. It was adapted by the Artistic Director of AFTEC, Dr Vicki Ooi, into a fresh and unique educational adventure for the Jockey Club “From Page to Stage™” Programme in March 2012. This was the first in a triennium of the English drama programme sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the title sponsor.
The light-hearted plot revolves around the handsome, clever, and rich Emma Woodhouse who, in the eyes of the others, might seem to be a rather spoiled young woman often overestimating her own matchmaking abilities.
Complacent with her self-declared success at matchmaking for her governess, she takes it upon herself to match her poor friend Harriet with Mr. Elton, which leads to a series of misconstrued romance heading towards a comical resolution of self discovery.
Adapted and performed in simplified English, with the help of well researched Georgian Regency period costumes and an original, highly hummable score by a local composer with lyrics to match, AFTEC embarked on a classic that is much loved by one and all.
