AFTEC’s Youth Theatre in English production of The Browning Version and Harlelquinade, a double bill by Terence Rattigan, is a salute to the renowned British dramatist whose plays are still performed all over the world 30 years after his death.
Directed by Stephan Spurr, the two plays feature the performance of Bravo! Hong Kong Youth Theatre Awards awardees and other young acting talents. Come and celebrate with us the great works of a dramatist who wrote some of the most memorable and important plays of the 20th century.
In The Browning Version, arguably Rattigan’s finest play, Andrew Crocker-Harris, a desiccated school master, is about to retire unloved by the boys, unvalued by the school where he has taught for 18 years; and betrayed by his wife, Millie. But a pupil’s parting gift releases Andrew’s pent up emotions, turning a long term defeat into a victory of the spirit. Praised by The Daily Telegraph as “a play of extraordinary depth, compassion and psychological perception”, The Browning Version is a moving story that is beautifully melancholic.
Harlelquinade is a farcical demonstration of a late 1940’s dress rehearsal of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet by a touring company. The Gosports, old enough to be the parents of the ” star crossed lovers” they are playing, resort to whatever means they can give to the illusion of youth. The rehearsal progresses from one comic crisis to another, climaxing in a scene of hilarious confusion. This is simply a fun, amusing and enjoyable comedy that you can’t miss!
