“Women feel just as men feel.”
– Jane Eyre
Orphaned at ten, Jane Eyre is sent to live with her aunt who despises her. Strong and outspoken, the young girl tries to rise up against this. Not knowing what to do with her, her aunt sends her to a boarding school where she meets the sympathetic Miss Temple, who inspires her to become a teacher. Jane often dreams of a world where women can have the same opportunities as men, and when she finishes her education, she advertises and gets a position as the Governess of a young French girl at Thornfield Hall where she meets the mysterious Mr Edward Rochester. The attraction between Jane and Rochester is almost immediate but Rochester has a secret that he hides from the world. . . Will this secret ruin Jane’s chances of happiness?
This beloved novel by Charlotte Brontë from 1847 is a classic that deserves to be re-interpreted, re-invented and re-told time and time again. Don’t miss this new production by AFTEC and Emerging Director Michael Sharmon this summer!
